Wampum, carved from the deep purple and white shells of the quahog clam, carries a legacy rooted in the traditions of Northeastern Native American cultures, where it served not only as adornment but as a means of storytelling, ceremony, and record. Along these same coasts, generations later, the pursuit of the sperm whale gave rise to another enduring material, shaped by both ocean and hand and woven into Nantucket’s maritime history. This work draws from the meeting of these histories: shell and sea, craft and endurance. Each piece reflects a dialogue between natural form and human intention, honoring materials that have long held meaning, utility, and quiet power.
